Seiko's Japan-domestic-only metronome watch for musicians. A minimalist 36.5mm stainless steel case with white dial and black calf leather strap — the minute hand doubles as a metronome indicator, oscillating between 40–304 BPM in 41 steps. Reference tone function plays six pitches (A and B♭ at 440/442/443 Hz). Quartz movement powered by a CR2016, ~$200 in Japan.

TAG Heuer's Alter Ego line, introduced in the 2001 catalog — a refined quartz dress watch originally designed as a women's silhouette, though its 29mm proportions suit smaller wrists across genders. Sapphire crystal, stainless steel case and bracelet with butterfly clasp, 100m water resistance. A quietly elegant option that's since been discontinued.

Reference 4130-5250, cased October 1976 — Seiko's rectangular tank in its quartz years, and small by modern habit at 28 × 31mm on a mesh bracelet. The dial is a patterned mirror: a fine texture worked into a polished specular ground, so it reads as a dark field at one angle and throws the light back whole at another. A single Roman XII and the SEIKO QUARTZ line are the only things allowed to interrupt it. The 4130 belongs to the cal. 41 family, the first compact quartz Seiko built in volume and the movement it put in the upper end of the catalogue — a 32kHz crystal, around ±20 seconds a month, and with no seconds hand to drive, a stepper that advances in five-second increments rather than once a second.

Tissot's Heritage-line reissue of its own interwar Art Deco rectangular watches, produced from the late eighties into the nineties and now harder to find than the Cartier Must and Reverso shapes it sits between. A curved stainless steel case of roughly 28 × 36mm over a silver dial with black numerals and an inset small seconds at six. Inside is a Swiss ETA 980.163 quartz — the reissue never pretended to be mechanical, and the proportions are the point. Sold as Z173K, Z173W, and Z173G depending on finish and dial.

Crispin Jones drew this one in 2005 for a series of concept watches, and it has been the London house's signature since. The hour hand reads 'remember' and the minute hand 'you will die', so reading the time is what assembles the sentence. The dial and the inner rim of the glass are mirrored, which is the part that does the real work: you catch your own face in it while you read, in case there was any question who the line was addressed to. 37mm steel, mineral crystal, 20mm lugs, around $260 in the quartz build; a later 40mm version runs a Sellita SW200 automatic. Read as intended it is the cheerful version of a memento mori — the point is that the time is finite, not that it is nearly up.

Zippo's classic Slim model in a high-polish brass finish (model 218). Windproof, refillable, and built with Zippo's signature click-shut hinged lid. Slimmer and lower-profile than the standard Zippo — fits flush in pockets. Backed by Zippo's lifetime guarantee: 'It works, or we fix it free.'

The unstructured cut of the Empire Carryall, a silhouette out of Coach's own archive with the frame taken back out of it — glovetanned leather left to slump rather than held square. Zip-top closure, two top handles, and a detachable strap for carrying it crossbody. Inside is one open compartment with a snap pocket and a zip pocket, and side gussets that buckle open when you need the extra room. Made in four sizes (21, 28, 40, 48); the 40 takes a 13-inch laptop and the 48 takes 16 plus a change of clothes. The Loved Leather finish is the same bag with the colour rubbed back at the wear points, so it arrives already looking carried, which is the condition Coach's own repair workshop spends its time restoring vintage ones out of.
